Addo Elephant National Park Matyholweni

Camp Matyholweni in the Addo Elephant National Park

Description

Camp Matyholweni, opened in October 2004, is the new satellite rest camp in the park. Matyholweni (which means "in the bush" in the Xhosa language) is situated in the new southern block of the park near the small town of Colchester. Access to the camp is very convenient, with the N2 highway (between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown) a mere 3 km from the camp. 61 units are available in the main camp and 12 units available in Camp Matyholweni.
The camp has 12 self-catering chalets, nine of which sleep two people. Three of the chalets sleep two people plus a sleeper couch suitable for one or two children.

A new road road through the Southern block, links Camp Matyholweni to the Addo Main Camp and the main game viewing area. Large game such as elephants, buffalo, zebra etc. will only be released in this area once fencing is complete in 2008. Please note that the gate linking the two Camps opens at 7.00am and closes at 5.30pm. At present, the Matyholweni area is home to many bird species and smaller mammals such as bushbuck, bushpig, kudu and common duiker.
